THE INTERNATIONAL HANDBELL SYMPOSIUM
The Australasia Handbell Society did a wonderful job of planning and hosting the
International Handbell Symposium in Brisbane, Australia August 1-5. The
participants were ringers from 10 different countries: Australia, New Zealand,
Japan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, Puerto Rico, Great Britain, and the
United States.
AGEHR Area XII was represented by David (Area XII Chair) and Dian Ruder from the
SF Bay Area, Claire Blackwell from The Master’s College in Santa Clarita, and
the Carilloneers (14 ringers) from the Claremont United Church of Christ.
Besides attending the Symposium, the Carilloneers toured the week prior to and
the week following the Symposium. During the first week, the group gave five
concerts in small towns and schools, which were very well received. Most people
in the audiences had not heard or seen handbells before.
This Sunday, August 20, at 3:00 pm, everyone is invited to the Carilloneers
“Australia Concert” at the Claremont United Church of Christ Kingman Chapel, on
the corner of Harrison and Harvard in Claremont, CA. The program will be
followed by an ice cream social. As Bill Waggener, director, says, “Round up
your friends, relatives, and neighbors and come to the air-conditioned Chapel
this Sunday afternoon for two treats - one for your ears and one for your
tummy!”

DIRECTOR/RINGER NEW IN AREA
Pearl Marshall, recently relocated from Maryland to North Hollywood, would like
to find a handbell home, either as a director or a ringer. Pearl started a
handbell program in a Maryland school for children in grades 1 – 8, and has also
directed adult and youth handbell choirs. She has rung with an auditioned group
in the Washington D.C. area. If your choir is in need of a director, ringer, or
even a substitute, give Pearl a call at
818-939-3257.

FALL 2006 RINGERS WORKSHOPS
Want to help your choir get a jump start on learning new music appropriate for
the Fall and Christmas season? Bring as many of your group as possible to one of
the Fall Ringers Workshops: September 30 in Pasadena or October 14 in San
Bernardino. We’ll have great leadership, the music is rated an accessible Level
2, and the hosts will prepare lunch – all for the reasonable cost of $15.00 per
participant!
Want more details? The answers to your questions about repertoire, registration,
etc. are on the LA Metro home page on the Area XII website:
www.areaxii.org. More questions? Email:

Although I promised that this eNewsletter would be on vacation in August, it
seemed that some of these items could not wait until September.
As you plan your music for the 2006-07 season, leave some money in your budget
to purchase the 2007 Spring Ring music. I am delighted that Christine Anderson
will be the director in April 2007, and we are planning to announce the
repertoire selections early in September.
