Dear Handbell Friends, I expect that many of you have polished your bells, packed them away, and are enjoying a bit of vacation. Time out is good and refreshing. Then you can return in the fall with renewed enthusiasm. Please do take note of the Workshop planned for late September to help you get a “jump start” into your fall and Christmas season. I will be on vacation in late July through early August, so do not look for an eNewsletter in August. Stay cool! Shirley Heckman
2007 FALL RINGERS’ WORKSHOP Plans have been made for a wonderful FALL RINGERS’ WORKSHOP at the Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena on September 29th. Lee and Bill Waggener, clinicians, will teach skills that will improve our bell choirs, teach how to learn music more efficiently and effectively, plus help us learn some useful music for the fall and Christmas seasons. An added bonus will be a special session for directors during the lunch hour. The Flyer for this Workshop has been sent to each of you by email and is also now available on the LA Metro home page on the Area XII Website: http://www.areaxii.org. The Registration Form can be filled out on the computer, printed and sent in together with your check. If you are not able to fill in the information on your computer, just print the blank form and fill it in by hand. Linda Krantz, Greater San Gabriel Valley Liaison, is planning this event and will be the registrar. It will help her in the planning process if, when you decide to attend the Workshop, you would send her an email to tell her that you are coming and approximately how many ringers will be coming with you. Her email address is ringwithme@sbcglobal.net. Of course, your registration and check are still due by the deadline date of September 14th.
AREA XII COMPOSITION CONTEST The Area XII Composition Contest Committee is pleased to announce that Kathleen Mackie (Merced, CA) is the winner of the contest with her original composition, Ancient Echoes. This beautifully constructed piece for 4-5 octaves of handbells uses optional handchimes, flute, small percussion and three treble voices. This 4:30 minute piece is rated at a difficulty level of 4 and will be used for either a copper or bronze group of ringers. Kathleen and Area XII will make copies available for registrants who will be playing this level of music at the Riverside Conference in 2008. We were delighted by the wonderful response we received from Area XII composers with some excellent compositions submitted. Many of these works are highly suitable for solo ensembles, but in some cases not appropriate for massed ringing. We do thank these composers for taking the time to submit their works for review. In addition, we thank the anonymous committee that carefully judged the pieces and offered some very helpful comments to these composers. David Ruder, Area XII Composition Contest Chair
ARSIS YOUTH HANDBELL ENSEMBLE The Arsis Youth Handbell Ensemble will soon be starting their US concert tour. This is a group of amazing young ringers who have attended a Handbell School and have been in training since the age of 11. These 17 ringers competed from a group of 200 to win a space in this ensemble. Below is their tour schedule, copied for your information in case you will be traveling and able to attend one of their performances. Of course, please note the concert on August 8 in Simi Valley. For more information about the Arsis Youth Handbell Ensemble, visit their website: http://www.arsis.ee/children/childensemble.php?page=3D2&lang=en From 26th of July until 17th of August concert tour in America
